Welcome to Worldpay from FIS Integrated Payments developer community. This site is designed to get you familiar with the variety of resources available to help you integrate our payment processing solutions and add-on features to your payment application. Worldpay from FIS Integrated Payments leverages two core platforms: Express and MercuryPay. Whether your payment application is for card present or card not present, we use the latest technologies to help reduce PCI validation and time consuming EMV network certifications.

With Worldpay from FIS' Integration Suite for both MercuryPay and Express, software vendors have a simple, direct path to:

Removing applications from scope for PA-DSS validation
Direct integration methods for complete control
Payment middleware reducing cost and time during development
Omni-Commerce platform development

What are my Integration Options?

Integration Life Cycle

1. Solution Architecting

You will be assigned a dedicated Solutions Consultant for the duration of your integration project and for the life of your business relationship with Worldpay from FIS Integrated Payments. As a first step our Solutions Consultants will work with your team to aid in:

Deciding which features and functionalities you wish to implement. This may drive the programming language or integration method best suited for these features.
Understanding the specific requirements for your target industry/business.
Deciding which integration method best fits your payment solution architecture.

2. Active Development

This is where you will actively integrate your solution to Express or MercuryPay processing platforms. You will also find endless resources on this site, our GitHub repositories and a level of payment expertise from our Solution Consultants that is above industry standards.

Contact integrationteam@vantiv.com to order test cards, test devices and of course for any questions that arise during your development work.

3. QA and Certification

Once your integration work is complete, we will perform a series of reviews to make sure your payment solutions is functioning properly and ready to go to market.

Transaction Review: All payment solutions require a transaction review. Worldpay from FIS Integrated Payments will provide a custom script fit for your integrated solution. Once approved by our Solution Consultants, we will provide you with a Transaction Review Certification letter.
Compliance Review: Our compliance specialists can assist with a preliminary compliance review and assist with questions you may have in preparation for a Qualified Security Assessor audit, if necessary.
Beta Review and Certification: Before releasing your payment solution into production, it will undergo a Beta review. During this time, your Solution Consultant will monitor and review all of the transactions that are processed, and analyze them to ensure payment-type interchange stability and to ensure that the best-qualified rates are maintained.

4. General Availability

After your product is released into full production, Worldpay from FIS Integrated Payments provides you with ongoing resources and support, including:

5. System Enhancements: Upgrades or Adding New Features

We are a software provider in the gaming industry. Customers use our software to track players and award them points that have $ value. Some of our customer want to take those loyalty rewards and place them on a gift card. We would like to connect our browser based software to your system to add value to new or existing gift cards. Our customers will redeem the cards through their existing POS (the first customer uses Micros and is currently testing your interface). We want to be able to connect directly to your systems so when we work with other customers that might have different POS systems, our connection to your system would not have to change. We haven't been able to connect with anyone to help work through this so any guidance is appreciated.

We welcome your participation in the Worldpay ONE Community, an online community that is working together to share ideas and propose solutions. We want all of our members and visitors to have the best possible experience; and your respectful and cooperative interactions will help us achieve that goal. Thank you for using your best judgment as you participate, for following our guidelines, and for reporting abuse and other inappropriate content if it is posted.

The Worldpay ONE Community will be supervised by moderators that will review content, help our users get the information they need, and address issues that members bring to their attention. These moderators may delete or edit content that is inappropriate, misleading, or doesnt follow our guidelines.

While common sense is typically the best guide, we have established the following guidelines to set general expectations:

What to do:

Enjoy our community. Ask questions, share knowledge, and reach out to other people to exchange ideas respectfully.
Play nicely in the sandbox.
Only upload and post content that is appropriate and belongs to you.If you upload an avatar or profile image, only use images that you have created or have permission to use. What to avoid:

Using online banking credentials to register. It is important to use different passwords for online banking and social media sites. Please use a new password for this site.

Using offensive language.
Using personally-identifiable, private, or confidential information. Our websites are for general use and are not intended for children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect information via our websites, applications, services, or tools from users under the age of 18. Comments in HTML format will not be accepted.
Our point system and user status is designed to reward users for making positive contributions to the community. Please don't take actions solely for the purpose of amassing more points and improving your status, especially if those actions won't enhance the community experience.

Hi Chandra. I tried to recreate the experience on a test iOS device version 13.4.1 and was able to save to download one of the files. So I would agree with your statement above that it may be a phone issue and not specific to the documentation download capabilities of the developer community. Apologies you are having issues. I would love a summary of your different 'onlines'. When a new merchant or a merchant with a new system or project wants to onboard to your systems which one is preferred and which are best for different purposes. I know of a few Raft610 and ISO. Is there some way for you to list all your different products or integration points and which types of customers would best use each product.

Hello, my name is Taylor, I'm the lead engineer on the Karatstars project. I'm the CEO, and founder, and wear a lot of hats.

I'm hoping that Vantiv will partner with my E-commerce company which only sells physical products. I have attempted to work with several payment processors, every time it is said that what I'm doing is against their terms or compliance. My platform uses a blockchain token. Its utility lies in our own system and there is no implied value. When someone shops in our store, we give away tokens based on the amount money spent on our platform. This contributes to the growth of our company, you can use the platform tokens on our platform for voting on various issues. I recently read that Worldpay was doing business with projects which are actually dealing, selling, exchanging crypto currencies, so I am hoping that my project is compliant because i have no intention to sell, let people exchange etc, my token! Please let me know ASAP.

I believe that Worldpay ECommerce has an eProtect platform that works with

UK accounts. We just went through an integrated for this on a WooCommerce

plugin and it was not too tough, about 1 - 3 days or so of dev work and a

couple of certification tests to make sure it's all in order. They have an

iFrame and a JavaScript variant … I know at least one of the Merchants

using it is capturing funds to the UK.

I'm doing both front end and back end. We have essentially all the coding done, I just need to plug in our UK CC processing capability that will be parallel to our US CC processing capability (authorize.net) depending on which office takes the payment. The back end is in JAVA, and full integration would be ideal. We have a WorldPay account, so that should not be an issue and I have access to the account.

Greetings. Are you more front end or back end? The Vantiv / Worldpay One developer platform has a ton of code samples and integration guides that can help you if you need to create a custom integration, and likely a lot of existing developers who might have options for you as well if you want something more 'off the shelf.'

If your UK branch isn't currently setup for CNP (card not present) transactions, you will likely need a new account either way as card present and card not present transactions carry different risks and costs to Merchants, so getting a new channel setup is probably part of the equation regardless of where in the Worldpay ecosystem your current platform is (and will continue to be.)

There are a number of platforms within the Worldpay ecosystem - when Vantiv acquired Worldpay several diffferent technologies came under one roof .... Worldpay Integrated Payments (Mercury, Element, Moneris), Worldpay Ecommerce (Litle & Co) and then Vantiv / Worldpay Core and Heritage Worldpay accounts.

If you'd like to chat about the platforms to get a sense of where your existing MID (merchant id) is, and what options are out there, feel free to DM me. You likely also have a Merchant support contact at Worldpay that can give you a 20k foot view of where your existing MID is, and which are the most compatible sister platforms.

I'm the web developer for Animal Genetics and our UK branch is using worldpay for their credit card processing and I need to add an online option for us to order and pay. I was directed to this website too integrate, but does this mean I need a separate account with vantiv, or how does it work????

I have been having some difficulty getting timely responses from my assigned Developer Integrations Consultant. I sent her an email last Friday 11/16 at 8:20 AM regarding this error but have yet to receive a response. I also left her a voice mail this morning just in case she did not see my email but no response as of yet. I do understand that everyone is busy and I'm just one of many customers but when I'm not able to process a payment I feel like this issue should be escalated to help us resolve it.

You have mentioned an assigned API Implementation Consultant the person I have been communicating with has a different title maybe I'm talking to the wrong person?

I'm unsure what is causing that specific error. We'd need to take a look at your CheckSale request.

At this point I must recommend that you align with your assigned API Implementation Consultant so that they can work directly with you as you move forward with the project.
It will likely be easier to work through these problems via e-mail or through some conference call working sessions.

The PaymentAccounts were created without first doing an Authorization and the expiration dates may have been keyed in incorrectly. I have access to the Virtual Terminal for all of our locations as was able to see that there were transactions from other merchants for the same cards and when I compared the expiration dates some of them were different. I was able to do a PaymentAccountUpdate to correct some of the card and they were processed without error.

I also had one CheckSale (ACH) which came back with an error that I have not been able to figure out the result message says "Invalid Company Number (should be 6 digits).(Invalid Data). Any idea what may be causing this error?

Yes I agree with your thought process.

How were those PaymentAccounts created originally?

If you did a PaymentAccountCreate without first doing an Authorization to validate the card, then it's possible that the PASS token would include unusable data - perhaps an expired card, etc. If you hand-keyed in the card data, you may have mis-keyed the expiry date, or the card number itself.

In general I recommend that you throw out any PaymentAccounts that you have, and that you start with a clean-slate.

As long as you do the PaymentAccountCreateWithTransID based off of an Approved $0.00 Authorization, then you know the PASS record is good, at least in terms of the expiration-date on the card.

Hope that helps. Please align with your integration consultant for next steps on your project.

Thanks I already have that document. I ran a CreditCardAVSOnly on some of the PaymentAccountID's and found that some of the responses are ExpiredCard and some say DeclinedCard. Since this method does not request authorization but can be used by merchants to determine whether to accept a transaction or not does that mean that the DeclinedCard responses are declined as of the time the method was run and they could be approved at some other time?

I will have to look further into the cards who's responses were ExpiredCard, but for now I think we need to verify that we have the correct expiration dates for those cards.

Thanks for the response I've been trying for about a week to get someone from WorldPay to answer that question. I spoke to our relationship manager and to our development integrations consultant but they were not able to give me a response to that question.

Somewhere in the developer resources it mentions a document called the Vantiv eCommerce XML Reference Guide but I have not been able to find a downloadable copy or get it from either one of the people I mentioned in the above paragraph. Any idea where I could find it?

Hi smclark354‌,

PaymentAccountCreate does NOT validate the card against the Auth network - it just performs a MOD10/luhn check to confirm that the card number conforms to the appropriate formatting.

I would recommend that you consider performing a CreditCardAuthorization for an Amount of $0.00 - this will validate the card number, expiration date, and CVV/AVS if needed.
Then you can perform PaymentAccountCreateWithTransID to generate a PASS record.
I recommend that you reference the Express API Spec for specifics: https://developer.vantiv.com/docs/DOC-1353

We recently accepted a credit card where the expiration date was 02/20 but when we attempted to charge the card the response was Expired Card. I asked relationship manager to help us, she did a review of the card and found other transactions from other merchants however she shows the correct expiration date is 02/21.

My question is when we call the PaymentAccountCreate method does it validate the expiration date on the card? If it does not then how do we know if we have entered the correct expiration date?

Hi Gordon, I have a quick question. When I run your code, what is the "encrypted card" textarea supposed to show? Is that supposed to show the token generated? For example, if I put in credit card number 410000000000001 and hit check out, is the encrypted card textarea supposed to show 1111222233330001? These are the numbers in your "expected result" textarea. No matter what credit card I put in, nothing ever appears in the "encrypted card" textarea. The manual says "The eProtect server returns a Registration ID (low-value token) and your server constructs the cnpAPI transaction using that ID." Is this encrypted number the low-value token, which I construct a transaction from? Thank you!

My name is Steve Stilson. I'm a Software Engineer who has been assigned to an NPR station to get their web donation functionality more secure. We want to take donations and pledges via our web page from a viewer's credit card, but we don't want the credit card numbers to pass through our servers, or be stored there. I heard that would violate PCI Compliance. So, hopefully Vantiv and Worldpay can take the credit card numbers for us, and then send us a token, which we can use to take the pledge from the radio listener and issue them a receipt.

I studied computer security in the Ural State University, but I never worked by this exactly profession.

At the moment I'm a co-owner of two small companies.

Marketing is a new area for me, where I have no knowledge or experience at all. I've never been engaged into marketing because (at the moment) our company doesn't need it. The customer flow is bigger than we can provide with a service. Nevertheless, I hope that the marketing experience could be interesting and useful for me! Our companies are growing so it can be helpful later. It's also important for me to spend time in a big company to see how you manage everything there so I probably can adopt the best practices in our companies. Another goal is to get an experience of work and communication in a foreign country. Chellenges like this may help me to overcome stress today and in the future. In October we (I and my husband) are moving to Zurich, Switzerland. He is going to work there for Google as a developer and I'm going to find a job in Zurich or run a small business there and also continue managing our companies remotely. I also learn both English and German languages and sometimes I confuse one with another.

In my spare time I normally do aerial silks (which is my hobby for the last 2 years), travel, read books or spending time with my family and friends.

I'm still maintaining code I wrote 25 years ago. I'm glad I inserted lots of comments. I was particularly careful to make notes in complex sections where there was lots of handling exceptions. Using clear descriptive names for fields, variables, methods and objects helps a lot too. Most important of all is the user interface. Novice users should be able to look at a a screen and have a good idea of what is going on. Always provide a help button that immediately pops up a window clearly explaining what is happening on that specific screen and what the options are. Never make the user search for help and your support phone won't ring so much.

2. Then choose your language, HTML, CSS, XML, SQL, PHP, JQuery, and other Web technologies in addition to JavaScript. Give variables and methods purposeful names.

4. Review code with other coders that understand "clean coding"

5. Test. and repeat to keep the "clean code" mindset.

Maybe I've missed something, but it should really be mentioned in the section for each method, because you will typically implement one method at a time using those pages as the reference.

It's grad season - which means tons of bright-eyed, newly-minted college graduates are hitting the proverbial pavement (er, the keyboard at least), degrees in hand, hoping to snag a job.

As a liberal arts major myself (English and Philosophy - If you want to talk John Locke and epistemology, I'll be your best friend), I asked Worldpay's Senior Talent Management Consultant Audrey Inniger how students interested in a programming or engineering career can stand out in a job search, even if they don't have a degree in the field. Here's her 5 tips for new grads:

1) Embrace what makes you unique.

Use the distinctive skills you learned within your major to create a selling point for the role you hope to achieve. For example, perhaps you were a Philosophy major, hoping to obtain a role as a Software Developer. When going through the job hunt, discuss how your major in Philosophy allowed you to learn how to critically think and solve problems, which will help you excel in your work as a Software Developer.

2) Take advantage of free tools and curriculum.

Utilize free tools to update your technical skill set related to the job you want. There are many resources available both online and at your local public library that you can use to enhance your skillset: podcasts, books, technical trainings, online courses, and tutorial videos. Personally, I recommend Codeacademy.

3) Leverage your network!

Take advantage of LinkedIn connections, your university’s alumni network, and friends to schedule informational conversations to learn more about potential opportunities.

4) Don't rely on cookie cutter resumes.

Not all jobs are the same, so your resume shouldn’t be identical for every application either. Tailor your resume to the role applying by listing your skills and experiences that best fit the job description.

5) Include a cover letter.

I typically don’t recommend a cover letter, but in this scenario, it’s smart. When you’re new to the job market, a cover letter is a useful way to list your transferable skills, and the reasons why you are applying for a role outside of your dedicated major.

Some bad advice I received early in my career was to “Follow the money,” because everything else is a waste of time. What did this entail?

To follow a career path that paid the most. Regardless of what you think you want to do, focus on the money.
- Don’t take into account fulfillment, or passion, just go make money.
To only focus on having conversations with people with a higher salary than you, and try to influence them.
- Forget networking with your co-workers, only speak to executives
You need to promote success. The “Fake it till you make it” stance by showing you is successful.
- Forget crippling debt, you will be able to pay it off later

This might be similar to the ABC of, Glengarry Glen Ross… to me it seemed to be a lot of wasted opportunity to learn and advance my skillset.

On the other hand I have received equally awful advice of a different spectrum, which was as follows:

“It’s just a job”
- Are there any rules that say it can’t get better?
“Don’t ask questions,” or “Don’t rock the boat”
- This mentality is why “It’s just a job”
“Just come in and do your 8, and go home.”
- Only further perpetuates why “Its just a job”

I personally prefer to question everything and think critically, I also enjoy a good challenge in my work. The status quo of just punching a clock and warming a desk might work for some; or the “chase the dollar” dream for others. This is not what has worked for me.

My advice would be, take every piece of career advice with a grain of salt, and find what works best for you.

I am not sure if these are the worst but surely not the best anyone should keep hearing from his friends and family :

1. Just settle for one career path and do not keep thinking of a change or switch:

Every individual should grow but not necessarily only in their area of their educational degree or only in the initial job they took after college. Every now and then they have to keep moving towards a bigger challenge in life to keep them engaged. Switching jobs or changing career paths within the company for the right reasons is never a wrong thing to do according to me.

2. Don't fear rejection :

Sometimes a little fear is good and appreciated i feel . It keeps oneself ticking and always thinking of how to solve the problem at hand.We should listen to everyone but most importantly we should listen to ourselves as well. Our personal experiences teach us most than others experience being shared with us.

3. Be Open to input always:

Considering this a common advice given these days, you don't have to take everyone's advice every time. But yes spend some time listen to it as it may not be applicable this time but will help someday with some other problem.

When I saw in the news a few years ago that payment companies were considering chip implants I mentioned it to a colleague who then, quite seriously, told me that he would never, ever allow that because that would be the "mark of the beast":

“He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

And he causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.” (Revelation 13:15-18)

So I expect there will be a not insignificant portion of the population that will be against the idea of chip implants.

Seems like bio-hacking (cloning whatever unique signal the chip gives out) or worse(!) bio-jacking (illegally stealing chips from medical patients, and people desperate enough to sell them) would be the new counterfeit in that brave new world.

Honestly, I am extremely down for any future with computer implants, tattoos that change color and shape with your mood, neon-drenched cities, overcoats, clear umbrellas to protect everyone's cool hairdo from the constant drizzle. Basically I just want to be in Blade Runner.

If you look at the technological advances in the the last 20 years and project what the next 20 years might bring us, I think no one in this discussion is going far enough. Everyone is still thinking in the box.

Envision everyone, except those living off the grid, having a chip in their body added either subcutaneously by injection or ingested in pill form. Your body's internal electrical activity powers the chips, so they last a lifetime. Counterfeiting is impossible, since it is tied to your body and likely also tied to a global tracking system, so the banks/card networks know where you are (Big Brother would be watching - 1984 in 2028). If the system knows where you are and a counterfeit chip appears trying to make a purchase at a different location, it is blocked.

Cashiers and POS devices become a thing of the past, as items you pick-up are scanned by sensors as you leave the store and the charges made automatically. Computers also have built-in sensors that identify you for online purchases no matter what system you use. Simple and convenient, though admittedly, more than a little scary.

This might seem a little crazy, but the technology already exists, just having to be refined and built-out. And, each generation seems to be willing to surrender a little more privacy in exchange for "simplicity".

1. Every day spent 15 min on learning or reading through best practices or clean code guidelines. It could be "Effective Java Programming" or "Clean Code" book.

2. More and more practice of TDD so as to make sure each line of code written is unit tested and there are no surprises.

3. Using online programming website like Hackerrank to keep yourself abreast of latest and greatest

4. Form a discussion group or more like a guild of developers and other team members in company and discuss and brainstorm problem on hand

5. Do more and more code review for others as it helps see lot of mistakes or ideas which are otherwise missed

6. Use of Findbugs, SonarQube on regular basis to keep improving

7. Reading of data structures, algorithm and design pattern and more importantly practicing it and implementing in code.

8. Use of SOLID and DRY as much as possible.

This is Bland Smith and I provide IT services for a Texas restaurant group called Blue Baker. Blue Baker originated in College Station, TX and is highly popular with the Texas A&M staff and students.

I’ve excerpted some pointers from an article I wrote a few years ago that may be helpful to our audience here.

“[Public cloud] service providers need to prove via audits they can be good stewards of other people’s intellectual property by having precautions like redundant network connectivity; diverse paths for power supplies; huge banks of batteries; generators with days of available fuel; physical and logistical access protection; and so on. These security measures are more than a typical company would provide for its own servers, making cloud services from a reputable provider more secure than self-hosting data. […]

Business continuity and disaster recovery can be greatly enhanced by cloud technologies. In the old days, when companies ran their own data centers and computing resources, the prudent ones performed regular backups and maintained redundant resources in offsite locations. Now, I'm not saying don't work hard and do a good job - that's obviously good advice - but if you want a raise/promotion you've gotta ask for it. And you've gotta constantly promote yourself to show you're doing a good job *and* that what you're doing provides value.

There's a lot of thankless work in programming. A lot of stuff that's extremely valuable but is totally invisible to users/management. It's up to you to promote yourself. Good work can easily go unnoticed.

Worst advice I'd been exposed to was this:

Work longer hours and burn the midnight oil as much as you can; this will make the product top notch from the extra effort.

As a young developer, we're given the impression that in order to be successful, our salt is derived from putting in as much extra time as possible. We had a chart in the office at one point, were the departmental "priorities" were laid out for us in order:

God
[Manager's name redacted]
Family
Everything else

As weisenheiming as it was, to a younger group of developers it was seen as something a bit canon. After some time, it becomes the de-facto for the group, and unfortunately, the outcome of such "dedication" ends up taking its toll on both the mental and physical well-being of the practitioner.

In short, don't burn yourself out just to fit in to a group that has been lashed into thinking "more is better". We're "knowledge workers", not laborers - our brains need downtime to recuperate and retain the ability for learning. If your management team thinks otherwise, find another team (or employer) which respects and rewards a healthy mind.

Paste Events on the eProtect Iframe

I see in the eProtect-iframe-enhanced-ux.js that gets loaded when the iframe loads that there is a cvcPaste and panPaste function, but I don't see any documentation on how to access those events.

Hello, my name is Matt Olson, and I'm an SAP developer at Room & Board, stationed just outside of downtown Minneapolis. Many times while looking for 3rd party support, I feel like the odd duck as there doesn't seem to be as many SAP/ABAPers combing the forums with SAP-specific questions. Fortunately we've learned to play well with REST protocols so I'm happy to see that quickly becoming the interface of choice.

We're in the middle of rolling out triPOS across all of our retail stores. Since our POS system is a customized SAP order-entry system, we ABAPers have had to learn a lot about payments. I'm looking to stay on top of the latest & greatest triPOS offerings. Additionally, we're looking to implement a new gift card solution, and would be excellent if we could leverage triPOS and our existing Ingenicos for that.

I'm a big fan of the Twin Cities and it's wonderful interweaving of urban areas and parks. I can literally "mountain" bike to work, as there are miles of single track trails leading from my house all the way to Room & Board. Yet I can also hop on my road bike and head the other direction via paved bike trail and be downtown at Target Field (where the Twins play), or at a farmer's market along the Mississippi River in 10 minutes. That's my little plug for any and everyone that hasn't visited the Twin Cities...I spend most of my free time with my 2 kids, watching them grow up way too fast and attempting to photograph their wonderful goofiness.

The choice is easier now than ever, as the top 3 cloud providers Google, AWS and Azure are all offering free tiers, that enable you to try out their systems at no cost. They have all come a long ways since the early days, and now provide a wide variety of integrated services. There is also the option to utilize a fixed cost, cloud VPS like digitalOcean, which is very reasonable in terms of price and resources.

In these days of cyber warfare and script kiddies trying to access any site they can, it is imperative that you have your application deployed on a reliable, redundant system. You also get the benefit of being to scale your application dynamically or very easily. The additional cost, if any, is minimal and well worth the investment.

What did we choose? We have developed and maintain thousands of sites and applications and have used all of the providers above, since their inception. Each has their strong points and the appropriate provider would depend on the specific application and your own requirements.

Cash and physical credit cards will continue to be around while digital payments will be more prevalent. We may also see more adoption of cryptocurrency and biometrics.

Definitely having a good understanding of your business needs/requirements associated with performance and scalability will bring great insight into this discussion. I'd also propose finding the ROI of your current solution (provided to internal and external clients - Do you know how much it cost to keep the existing solution? Will your clients pay more for your services (upsell) if you moved to a cloud-based solution? What are the benefits from their point-of-view?) and compare against the proposed solution, if implemented. The value your data delivers to your clients can be a key driver, should you need executive approval.

How about an end-to-end cost matrix where you also include downtime, ongoing maintenance cost as well as migration support cost (before, during, and after implementation -- remember to account for an Exit plan!) in addition to internal resources, future upgrades (product roadmap), etc.?

Some of the problems we were looking to solve included improving performance and enhancing scalability so we could extend or create new apps faster. Also, finding a better way to share resources was paramount, as well as a faster timeline for innovation.

I believe AI will mitigate a ton of processing space in the years to come pertaining mainly to the PayFac model. Hybridization will occur with traditional ISO’s.

Adding on these very helpful comments above, a couple of things that help constantly improve my coding skills are:

- Getting as much feedback as possible

- Accepting criticism

- Willingness to adapt and improve

Most of the fundamental coding practices are pretty much standard, however, coding styles vary between teams and it is upon oneself to adapt to it.

- DRY (do not repeat yourself)

- KISS (keep it simple) - don't write unnecessarily complicated stuff

- RTFM (read the docs)

- when fixing a bug make sure you fully understand the underlying problem before tackling it. Oftentimes you can create two new bugs while fixing one due to a lack of understanding.

- leave lots of comments where necessary. When I look back at code that looks wrong/weird and there's not a comment on it I kick myself - because I don't know if there was a reason I was doing that weird stuff.

- be smart when re-writing code. A lot of times code is messy because the problem is a lot messier than it seems on the surface.

- Also, personal preference - descriptive variable names. It can get wordy, and it's Java-like so it's not cool anymore, but if you know what type and what abilities a variable has when you're well past its definition, that makes things way more readable.

While this shouldn't be a difficult question to answer , the definition of "clean code" could mean different things to different programmers, organizations, reviewers,etc. I would be lying if I said here that all of the code I've written in my 20+ years of doing so would be considered "clean" (in fact, most of it isn't!! ). That said, however, I am "happy" with it, because I continue to learn something new on a daily basis - not just from exploring new techniques and innovations, but also when reflecting on the code I (and others at my company) have done in the past.

Aside from the excellent answers already provided, clean code, IMO, is code that one can learn from - if it's bad, then just knowing (and hopefully taking advantage of!!) opportunities exist to make it, and future code, better are a good thing. If it's good, then it can and should be used as a tool for teaching "green" developers that not everything they learned in school is applicable 100% of the time.

- GoF patterns are not features, kids! Use them only if the need presents itself - while the new Abstract Factory you created may impress some of the junior developers around you, the likelihood that you needed an OSx and a Windows version of your CreditCardSale operation is probably very small

- Code should speak for itself (sorry joe‌ ) - while comments are useful, you shouldn't have to try so hard to explain what it's doing. Always apply the KISS principle, no matter how far away from Valentine's Day it is...

- Love your QA people, and get them involved before you write a single line of code. Review your project's requirements with QA and any SME's to see what expectations they have from what you're about to embark on. Sometimes (speaking from experience here, folks) programmers will get ahead of themselves - perhaps from overconfidence - and just jump right in without knowing what the true intentions of the features are, or how someone without a programming background will be using what they will write. Remember, you're not using the software you are writing, so don't write it like you are - your QA (PM/BA/etc.) is closer to the person that will use it most times. Knowing that will allow your code to be praised for its efficiency and effectiveness!!!

- Did you forget to write that unit test? Shame on you...

- Take breaks. Watch a cat video if that's your thing (I don't get it, myself, but hey...). Burnout really sucks and will have an impact on your personal life (trust me on this), not to mention the code that you write. I'll look back on some code I'd written when I was burning the candle at both ends (with the midnight oil, too!), and damn - it is far from clean. Had I given myself the time for my brain to relax and be nourished with proper rest, my code would have shown that.

- Be nice to the programmer whose code it is that you are reviewing - he/she will probably review yours someday (oh, did I mention? Have code reviews ). You may not "agree" with how another programmer has decided to do something, but perhaps they know something you don't, or have seen something you've overlooked. Try to learn something from others' code before being critical or judgmental...

The best way to write clean code is to have an open and feedback-heavy code review process. Otherwise will catch what you overlook.

- read the documentation, carefully (e.g. Effective Go - The Go Programming Language)

- use correct indentation and consistent code style. Does wonders for readability.

- make variable and function naming clear, even if it makes the names long

- comment heavily and in full English.

Personally, I think tools like Slack, Lync, etc. are extremely distracting. For teams that are located in different geographic locations, it can make sense to use them - on occasion. But too often I have found that it's a tool for socializing and chitchatting. If I need to get real work done I have to be able to unplug.

puppet inheritance VS puppet composition

is it a good practice to use puppet inheritance? I've been told by some of the experienced puppet colleagues Inheritance in puppet is not very good, I was not quite convinced.
Coming from OO world, I really want to understand under the cover, how puppet inheritance works, how overriding works as well.

There is a tool for everything, but that doesn't mean there is a tool that does everything. Slack is just another form of communication and can be valuable if used property. Everyone uses each tool differently, so this argument can be made with each scenario.

I would disagree that Slack overwhelms your best employees with your worst. If they truly are your best employees then they will continue to find ways to perform at the highest level. True leadership would set ground rules and have an actionable plan where progress and milestones can be tracked.

To me Slack is comparable to responding to emails on your phone, but at least you have a lame disclaimer about how you can't proof read or structure your sentences/paragraphs properly because you are typing like it's a text message.

On the bright side, we can now use Twitter with its 280 character limit.

I lived in the Slack communications universe for about two years with a remote team of web developers. I both loved and hated Slack. Being able to bypass email and zip a quick (and time critical) question was sweet. However, it soon became too easy to resist and the constant interruptions killed our dev flow. Suddenly everything became critical--and thus, nothing could be managed as such. We recognized it quickly and created rooms where non-devs could mingle with the dev team, so they had their code laden happy communications place and they could leave the general room when they needed some...

If I had Slack right now--we'll heck yeah, I'd use it. We have IM in our open office and I love it. The positives far outweigh the negatives. To me it's more of a personal preference that I try to gauge and see if my recipient is an office IM adopter. And if they are not, I go with email. (quick aside: I'm not sure which is better, a too-long Slack scroll or an email thread that if printed out would fill a small binder) But I do agree that if not policed properly, it's easy for Slack or any other IM tool to suck productivity from the greater group.

My vote: Slack On, but please do so with thought for your entire team.

This is a good one!! Email works for me even for quick questions called out in subject lines.. I do find instant messengers intrusive at times.. might work if general communication guidelines were followed!

full disclosure: I'm a millennial who loves communicating in gifs and fragmented text so slack is my perf playground #slacklyfe

In an open office environment, slack is a godsend for those quick questions that don't merit an email or a time-consuming desk visit.
I agree with Winter that the scrolling is broken.
I hate email threading and long emails in general and am all about killing email threads.
I agree with Winter that slack replacing documentation is a real risk (and I've seen it happen).
I don't think slack contributes to toxic work environments as much as Winter argues (I think that most of his frustrations can be tracked to open office environments and ineffective work communication in general)
I love love love communicating in gifs and in a work environment without slack, it's something I miss every day. (Joy is important to me.)
